I was very sad to hear of the death of Professor Wally Jay. Professor Jay was a jiu-jitsu pioneer and icon and one of the last great legends. I am happy to say that I had the opportunity to meet and receive a seminar from him back in 1998. Professor Jay was in the Seattle area (Vachon Island) at a Judo tournament and would also be conducting a jiu-jitsu seminar while there.

Steve & Wally jay 9805 Seattle
Since Seattle is not far away, I gathered about 12 students from my dojo and drove down to participate. Upon arriving we saw that only about 25 people were at the seminar, this was great news for us, as we basically received one on one instruction. Needless to say if was a great honor and pleasure to have this time and experience with Prof. Jay.

May 29 2011
This past weekend I was in Calgary Alberta to conduct a knife and gun defense seminar and a couple of Shodan gradings. I am happy to say that I had a great weekend. The seminar was well attended by students of the

Black belt grading
On Sunday, Travis Arnold and Paul Kravec were tested in their knowledge and performance of their Tadashii-Do curriculum. I was very impressed by their techniques and the level of energy both brought to the exam. The grading was a fast paced 3 hours and covered everything in the syllabus. I am proud to say both passed with flying colors. A big thanks to Sensei Sean Grimes and Sensei Tim Humphries who were present and took the beating as ukes. Sensei Malcolm and Sensei Sean, you should be pleased and proud of these students. Great job.

May 2010
In my role as a teacher and also a business owner I find it important to read and educate myself on topics other then just technique. Recently I have been quite a few books on leadership, I have found an author that I really enjoy. The author is
John C. Maxwell, he is an internationally respected leadership expert, speaker and author who has sold more than 18 million books. I enjoy reading his books because quite simply, they make sense to me, they are written to make reading the book easy. In September 2009, I commented on a draft chapter for one of his upcoming books called “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect”.
home_connectbook
The quote was in relation to use of force training and how to get others to understand how you felt, what you perceived and why you acted in the manner you did. The my amazement and surprise I later learned that the quote would be used in the book. In May 2010 the book was released and sure enough on page 66 appeared my name and quote. I have read the book a few times and have even referenced it in a leadership presentation to a group of black belts at a recent training camp. I recommend this book for all instructors and dojo owners alike, following the principles in this book will make definitely make you a better instructor.
