The 2010 Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union Summer Training Camp was held August 7-8 2010, in Sicamous British Columbia. By all accounts this 2 day event was a great success. Students from across Western Canada descended on this Shuswap community to receive jiu-jitsu instruction from some of Canada’s premiere instructors. Michael Seamark Shihan, Steven Hiscoe Shihan and Andy Dobie Sensei were well prepared to provide the participant with the best training possible. The instructors demonstrated with energy and passion why they are considered some of the top experts in the field. The students trained hard and with enthusiasm during every session and were very appreciative of the instruction. This was demonstrated by the standing ovation received by the instructors.

Phil Wiebe Sensei, Head Instructor of the local dojo and one of Steven Hiscoe student’s hosted the weekend. With his organizing team Wiebe Sensei once again hosted a great weekend of training of socializing. Everyone is looking forward to next year.

In my role as a teacher and also a business owner I find it important to read and educate myself on topics other then just technique. Recently I have been quite a few books on leadership, I have found an author that I really enjoy. The author is
John C. Maxwell, he is an internationally respected leadership expert, speaker and author who has sold more than 18 million books. I enjoy reading his books because quite simply, they make sense to me, they are written to make reading the book easy. In September 2009, I commented on a draft chapter for one of his upcoming books called “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect”.

The quote was in relation to use of force training and how to get others to understand how you felt, what you perceived and why you acted in the manner you did. The my amazement and surprise I later learned that the quote would be used in the book. In May 2010 the book was released and sure enough on page 66 appeared my name and quote. I have read the book a few times and have even referenced it in a leadership presentation to a group of black belts at a recent training camp. I recommend this book for all instructors and dojo owners alike, following the principles in this book will make definitely make you a better instructor.
